SKYLA
What is it? Skyla is a hormone-releasing intrauterine device (IUD) that is placed in your uterus to prevent pregnancy, and is 99% effective birth control for up to three years. An IUD is a small, t-shaped device that’s placed in your uterus by your OB/GYN during a routine visit. Getting an IUD is nonsurgical and typically takes just a few minutes. Once in place, it provides continuous, highly effective birth control.
How does it work? Skyla works by releasing a steady level of the hormone progestin into the uterus and preventing sperm from passing into the cervix. It is made of soft, flexible plastic, and is slightly smaller than other IUD methods. You can make sure Skyla is in place with a simple monthly check. Your healthcare provider can show you how.
